Three months ago in its 2022/2023 Federal Budget[1], the Labour Government announced spending of $312.6 million over the next four years to move the aged care sector from a predominantly paper-based environment to a digital one where systems connect.

The investment is one of the key recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, released in March 2021. The Commission found our aged care system to be “well behind other sectors in the use and application of technology … [with] no clear information and communications technology strategy.”[2] Only 14% of our residential aged care providers use integrated software systems to manage resident data and records.

The timing of this push to invest in aged care technology is exquisite for the Australian tech start-up, StrongRoom AI[3].

Established in 2017 by three young Australians, this start-up based in Victoria is set to transform drug management in residential aged care here and around the world. And it all looks possible given its following of national and global venture capital investors.

How are they going to transform the residential aged care?

Through a software platform with Artificial Intelligence (AI) capability called Strong Care[4]. The technology:

  • Speeds up the process of giving out medication;

  • Ensures medication management accuracy and compliance;

  • Eliminates adverse drug events;

  • Removes nursing time wasted on filling out and filing paperwork; and

  • Supports end-to-end workflows. For example, it connects with “My Health Record ” to enable a common repository of information about a resident’s healthcare status.

Where does AI come into it?

Through facial recognition technology[5], the residential care nurse positively identifies the resident, this then triggers the appearance of the resident’s medication record and needs on screen, and the nurse can then quickly confirm the resident’s identity and get on with managing medication delivery.

StrongRoom AI says its platform will reduce a carer’s administrative workload by 80%. This is great news for a stretched workforce that needs to increase its hours of care.

Late last year, the StrongRoom AI achieved an envious trifecta of:

(1) Being ranked as a top 10 Australian Financial Review innovation company;

(2) Receiving a Australian Good Design Finalist Award; and

(3) Being a finalist for the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards.

So watch this aged care technology space and the efficiencies it plans to deliver. And watch StrongRoom AI pursue its goal of taking its technology global.
