With families coming together, it can a challenging time with various views given on how elderly loved ones are coping in their own home.

Of course some, particularly those based overseas, may be visiting their elderly loved one for the first time in a long time and may be alarmed when they walk in the door.

My advice is to approach the situation calmly.

While your immediate reaction may be to move your elderly loved one into residential aged care keep in mind that most Australians hold the strong desire to remain in their own home and, if necessary, receive quality care in their home[1].

By all means, give me a call and bring me in to give independent advice.

This would involve me meeting your elderly loved one to hear their wants and wishes.

As I always say, having the right care, support and living arrangements in place at the right time allows your loved one to live a better and longer life, with the independence, dignity and security they desire.

The gift of company

If you have a family member who, due to age or a disability, will be spending the holiday period alone, consider engaging an in-home carer bring some cheer and serve a festive lunch.

A visit from one of our compassionate and professional carers from care providers vetted by us, is a heart-warming gift to those feeling isolated.

Residential facility visits – status

Australia is currently experiencing another COVID-19 wave.

In this environment, Commonwealth and State and Territory Health Departments[2] have advised visitors to be cautious when visiting loved ones in residential care facilities.

In the interests of everyone’s wellbeing and mental health, residential care facilities are to remain open to visitors even if they are managing an outbreak.

If you plan to visit, on the day of your visit, you will be expected to declare that:

  • You have undertaken a Rapid Antigen Test that day and confirm the result was negative.

  • You have not been in close contact with someone who has tested positive to COVID-19.

  • You are not experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

  • If you have recently had COVID-19, you have been clear of symptoms for seven days.

When visiting you must wear a mask, avoid bringing a large family group, remain 1.5 metres away from other residents, and try to meet in ventilated areas.

My best wishes to you for a safe and happy festive season.
