Tim*, husband of Monica* of 50 years, was given three weeks by his local hospital to place his wife, a patient recovering from a suspected stroke, in specialised acute dementia residential care.

The Problem

There was an added complication. The hospital’s paperwork included a “Behavioural Management Plan” stating that Monica displayed aggressive behaviours. The plan, however, did not outline the frequency or extent of those behaviours.

Such plans must be included in residential aged care facility applications and, unfortunately, they are red flags to admission departments.

Without details on the extent and frequency of the behaviours, an application is likely to be placed in the “too hard basket”. Tim quickly found this out when he approached 25 residential aged care homes and was promptly rejected.

Assistance Found

Hearing of his uncle’s frustrations, a nephew suggested he contact DR Care Solutions. The nephew had attended a seminar where DR Care Solutions Founder and CEO, Danielle Robertson, had spoken.

Taking this advice, Tim called Danielle for a free initial consultation. In that call, he quickly felt confident and comforted that Danielle could find a solution.

Our Approach

On engagement, Danielle immediately interviewed Tim and certain family members to gain an understanding of Monica’s personality, her likes and dislikes, before the onset of her frontotemporal dementia (with primary progressive aphasia).

From this information, Danielle drew up a Life Plan™ for Monica. This Life Plan™ formed part of the application for placement submitted by DR Care Solutions to residential aged care homes. Its commentary added more balance to the hospital’s Behavioural Management Plan.

Persistence

While the task of finding a placement was challenging, DR Care Solutions persisted by systematically approaching quality residential aged care homes on our database which aligned with the wants and needs of Monica, Tim and their family.

Starting with those homes closer to where Tim was living, the area of coverage expanded as the rejections from residential aged care homes multiplied. Those rejections were largely on the basis of there being no available rooms for such specialised care.

At all times, the family was kept informed of progress and when a possible option arose, Danielle joined Tim and family members on their on-site visits.

The Solution is Found

By week three, after approaching 85 aged care homes, one home - no less than 30 minutes from where Tim lived - was in contact to say they now had availability. Danielle joined Tim on a visit to inspect the home and meet its staff. Finding it to be first class and meeting Monica’s needs, Tim agreed to her placement.

Monica has settled in well, with a regular routine established. She is obviously happy in her new home as there have been no formal reports of aggressive behaviour.
