When selecting an in home care provider for your loved one, it can be difficult to navigate the aged care or disability care system. Family members invest time, energy and emotion accessing services through a lengthy process.

Once services are finally accessed often there is little thought given to the selection of carers to join the care team in the home. It is important to take the time and give careful consideration in deciding who will join the team. The carer is generally involved in the most intimate and personal activities of your loved ones life.

The surprising fact is that some customers don’t even realise that they have a choice of who comes to provide the care. Be selective!

When seeking in home care provider as well as choosing your care team, there are few things to consider.

  • Can I trust this carer?
  • Will they look after my loved one as well as I do?
  • Will my loved one feel comfortable?
  • Will my loved one like them?
  • Will the carer be there when we need them? Are they reliable?
  • Does the carer have life skills as well as qualifications?
  • Does the carer have a good attitude?

So, what do you do? Like any business or service decision, it is recommended that you do your due diligence. Here are 5 questions to ask:

  1. Has the carer completed the required compliance checks including: clear police check; current senior first aid with CPR; are they covered for indemnity and workers’ compensation insurance? Do they have comprehensive car insurance? Have there been any past accusations or complaints from clients regarding their care services?
  2. What qualifications and experience does the carer have that meet the needs of my loved one?
  3. Does the carer have the same values as my loved one? Eg; respect, cultural and linguistic expectations; LGBTIQ sensitivity etc.
  4. Does the carer have similar interests and hobbies to my loved one?
  5. What is the carer’s availability? Will they be allocated permanently to my loved ones care team?

These are just a few of the questions to ask when meeting with unknown care providers or carers. When assisting our clients to select a quality care provider (and carers) via the DR Care Solutions network of providers, it is really important that we review the specific cultural and care needs, wants and wishes of the client to ensure that they get the desired outcome and perfect match. The main aim for the client is to obtain the best outcome from a physical, psychological, cognitive, social and financial perspective.
