Helping Australians stay independent

An electronic technician by background, Graham Russell’s career has been dedicated to pioneering 24/7 technology sensors for mission critical areas of large enterprise and infrastructure such as banks, power stations, prisons and hospitals.

Since 2020, he has been applying his skills to help our older generation stay independent.

Through the ASX-listed Talius Group Limited[1], and as its Managing Director, Graham is bringing 24/7 care monitoring into the home. It’s delivered through a suite of sensor devices strategically placed in the home and connected to an online monitoring dashboard viewed by carers and loved ones.

The brilliant solution

While many of these sensor devices have been around for years, Graham has seized advances in technology and taken the brilliant step of connecting the devices and feeding their data into an AI machine learning tool (powered by the CSIRO) to produce graphs and alerts on a central dashboard. The display alerts the reader to what care action may need to be taken.

Talius Group calls its 24/7 technological-driven care solution, the Talius™ Smart Care System[2]. Now commonly found in our major residential care facilities, Graham would like to see it used by in-home care providers to allow more Australians to remain in their own home.

The system is the result of an enormous amount of research undertaken by the CSIRO[3] into the activities of daily living to identify when and where an elderly resident is at most risk. Below is an image of the current range of sensor devices.

The dashboard

The sample dashboard below shows how the data from the sensors is presented in useful and easy to follow graphs and alerts – all of which can be viewed 24/7 on your computer, tablet or mobile device.

How much does it cost?

Your  loved one's home can be outfitted with the most basic sensors for a few hundred dollars to install depending on what accessories are chosen, and around $1 - $2 per day for the ongoing monitoring.

If you want the full suite of sensors, you’re looking at a one-off fee of $1,500 and the ongoing subscription of around $16 per month.

An added bonus is that the system:

  • Has been designed so that family members can install the sensors.

  • Can also be paid for from a clients Home Care Package if they have unspent funds.

Addressing the concerns of carers

In conversation, Graham outlines the main reasons why people leave home to live in residential care and why in many instances this move can be prevented or delayed through the use of technology.

He explains that in 60% of cases, people find themselves in residential care because of the concerns of the family and person holding the Enduring Power of Attorney. They want to know that their loved one is safe and being looked after 24/7. Around 30% of cases involve concerns around falls and 10% of cases involve compromised health where the loved one needs 24/7 care.

For the 60% and 30% case categories, the Talius™ Smart Care System can deliver 24/7 monitoring in the loved one’s home.

Ask your in-home care provider

The Talius™ Smart Care System is relatively new to the aged care sector. Ask your in-home care provider whether they have the system in place. If they don’t, ask them to look into it.

The technology offers peace of mind and cost savings. It provides 24/7 monitoring of your loved one in real time and can reduce the number of in-home carer visits. The most important point is that you’re respecting your loved one’s desire to remain at home.

DR Care Solutions has no commercial relationship with HSC Technology involving the payment of commissions or exchange of money.
