Having been in the care sector for close to 37 years, I have noticed that my male clients are taking better care of themselves. Awareness-raising campaigns, such as Men’s Health Week, are getting their messages across.

Healthy habits

The message for the 2023 Men’s Health Week campaign[1] is “Healthy Habits” with plenty of information offered on the benefits of physical activity, healthy eating, adequate sleep and being social.

The curse of physical inactivity

A standout statistic is around physical inactivity. The research shows that 10 Australian men die each day as a result of being physically inactive[2].

While Australian men are more active than women, according to the research, our men are not active enough to help ward off diabetes, heart disease, bowel cancer and dementia[3].

This brings the shuddering average that men born in Australia die seven years younger than women[4].

How much physical activity is enough?

Well post this Men’s Health Week infographic on the fridge!

Male carers beware!

I raise the healthy habit of remaining active as all too often male carers do not take the time to look after their own health by taking a walk or joining mates for a swim or bowls.

Take for instance my client George with Alzheimer’s Disease. He and his brother, Jim, have lived together for decades.

For the past four years, Jim has taken on the role of carer and, in the last year, its Jim who has needed the medical support. Caring for George has taken too much out of Jim and now he has developed a heart condition.

We have organised in-home carers to help Jim care for George and allow Jim to take time out to enjoy some exercise with friends.
