We Need Aged Care Services. Where Do We Start?

I get asked this question every day. After working for more than 30 years in the aged care industry, navigating the field of aged care services in the government and non government sector seems second nature. I often forget it is a whole world in itself. A world of acronyms, jargon and secret codes that most people often do not understand. So where does one start?
I recommend people commence at My Aged Care. The federal government has created a one-stop website to aged care services around Australia. One website and one phone number that provides consumers with an information resource (portal) to access aged care services. Through this gateway, consumers can access information about navigating aged care services, the available funding and care services available from aged care organisations in their local regions. For more information visit My Aged Care.
This process appears to be so simple. Ideally, we would like to be able to type in the website, undertake a search, read about it and obtain your answer. Unfortunately, simple is not the experience many consumers have had. I heard a story from a colleague about the time she took a phone call from an extremely stressed carer. She tried to explain the process of calling My Aged Care and going through an assessment prior to accessing funded services. The carer cried and yelled,
‘What is an assessment? What is a portal?! You don’t make sense!’
To aged care service providers, assessments and portals are part of their everyday work life and part of the standard vernacular. To a carer under stress who is new to the aged care service sector, they might as well be speaking a foreign language. It’s stressful enough being a carer without having to navigate a whole new industry.
It is helpful to have a friendly face to sit down with over a cup of tea and explain the system and all your care options to you. DR Care Solutions helps our customers navigate the complex aged care system and provides support in planning for their care needs and accessing quality providers from a panel of hand picked home care services (if that the is the preferred option for care). DR Care Solutions acts as an advocate for aged cared consumers, tailoring services to specific needs of the client, offering expert advice and information about aged care services.
If you need a helping hand to navigate the aged care space and want some TLC instead of a website or call centre, feel free to call Danielle Robertson, DR Care Solutions.
