7 Minute Read

Spring has arrived! It's time to clean up and consider that lingering question: is my home too big for my needs? It may be time to 'rightsize'!

What does 'rightsize' mean?

The term "rightsize" originated in corporate management.

"Rightsize" is used in preference to "downsize" as the latter involves sacrificing something or giving up something bigger in response to economic hardship.

'Rightsizing' is the process of restructuring to meet new objectives and increase efficiencies rather than reducing costs. A far more positive spin!

Day-to-day, DR Care Solutions and SPACE Property Advocates witness the very real trauma experienced by clients who suddenly need to sell the family home or a long-held residential asset to move into a townhouse, apartment, retirement village, or residential aged care facility. Our guide, a joint project between DR Care Solutions and SPACE Property Advocates, The Spring Clean Rightsize Guide, can help alleviate that stress.

We use the word 'rightsize' in our guide as The Spring Clean Rightsize Guide is about living in a space that meets your needs (and we're about feeling 'right', not 'down'!).

To rightsize or not to rightsize?

As we age, we want to make life simpler, and one of the most significant ways of doing so is to sell the family home and move into a place that is the right size for our needs.

On entering your 60s and early 70s, it's a good idea to consider rightsizing your living arrangements to a townhouse, apartment, or retirement village.

Once you're over 80, you may be better off staying put as, at that stage, there is the real possibility of two moves: one into a townhouse, apartment, or retirement village, and then another into an aged care residential facility (nursing home).

Moving house at any age is stressful enough, but when you're over 80, such an upheaval needs careful consideration. It may be easier to adapt your existing home to meet your care needs, wants and wishes, and bring in any support or care 'as needed'.

Seek advice on future care and accommodation needs

If you need an independent third party to help you with the question of rightsizing, and to explore your future care needs, wants and wishes in relation, call DR Care Solutions for assistance. To understand our process, read some of our case studies:

Decided to rightsize? What Next?

To help you, DR Care Solutions and SPACE Property Advocates have teamed up to create The Spring Clean Rightsize Guide - available as a free downloadable at the end of this blog.

In addition to guiding you on Spring cleaning, it covers the steps involved in selling up to 'rightsize' to a living space that meets your needs.

Look at the project plan in The Spring Clean Rightsize Guide. It sets out the four main steps you need to carry out to complete your rightsize project.

The starting point is your Spring cleaning and sorting of a lifetime of possessions. It then moves to appointing a solicitor and a real estate agent, and then preparing your property to improve its value and maximise on the sale.

The common challenges faced and tips on how to overcome them are listed in The Spring Clean Rightsize Guide

If you are an older Australian, the timing of all this decision-making may see you feeling vulnerable with people - from real estate agents to family members - pushing their own agendas and overlooking your best interests.

Seek independent third-party advice for the sale process

Consider engaging an independent third-party seller's advocate, like SPACE Property Advocates, to guide and assist you at every stage of the sale process, and help you maximise on the sale of your home. Refer to the case studies in The Spring Clean Rightsize Guide which show you how you can benefit from their assistance.
